refreshing life and living refreshed |
In the beginning of 2009, sitting safely and financially secure in my Minneapolis apartment I made a pact with myself. Get out of this city. Get out and explore something - something somewhere, something anywhere, and do it soon. Soon became Sept 30th, a one-way ticket bound for SFO. Join me as I establish a new life, the next chapter of my San Franciscan life. No job, no apartment, no established network. It’s time to start fresh, new; it’s time to be refreshed with life. |
San Francisco.
A melting pot city that was partied by Jack Kerouc and fantasized by the gold diggers, has captured the hearts of millions, including mine. A love so strong that this past fall I packed up my few belongings and headed west.
I had no job, no social network, no home. However, I did move with a fellow traveler, some money ($4500), and a lot of hope.
Since moving to a new city, one of my primary objectives was to engage in more writing. So within this blog I’ve incorporated several little “new to the city” tips and stories that I hope might help other adventurous souls who have also become transplants. Let’s face it, moving to a new city isn’t easy - and neither is getting your feet firmly planted on unchartered territories.
So here it is. The beginning of collected tips of moving to a new city.
Before I launch into my blog, hear are a few words to share with fellow transplants:
Congratulations on your big move! It can be a long wait and journey just getting to your new home. Actually deciding to move, saying “Yes, I’m moving to “[city]” and it’s happening “[date]” is one of the most challenging parts of the move. However, once you set your mind to it, similar to other goals in life, you really can do it. Deciding to move, especially when there’s no job or love interest bringing you there, takes a lot of guts, gumption, and a curious soul to say “Yes, I’m doing it.”
Good luck on your upcoming venture. Remember, you’re doing it. You’re taking a chance - on yourself, life, and the world. Live it up and believe in yourself. Take this time to redefine you and what you want out of this life.
Be excited, be hopeful, be thankful! You’re on a grand adventure that not many people have the chance to live. Take each day as it comes and just enjoy. Live. Breathe. And when you get the chance, reflect on your experiences. It will make them even more rewarding.
